NEVER PUNCH THE CLOCK AGAIN
This partial version is more in the bluegrassy/folk vein that I wrote the song in. For the album, we went a different route and stretched it way out.
I have albums with a lot of short songs. This time I wanted to stretch out a bit. I had a lot to say in this parable of my life in the music business. I read an historic novel/book about “the devil’s backbone,” AKA the Natchez Trace, and how bandits would wait in the woods for those traveling North from New Orleans. I decided to write a historic account of a rounder who sets off from “Defiance,” which is actually a small town in Ohio. I love a good double entendre.
I do recall mentioning Little Feat somewhere in the discussions of the production of this song, and Kevin Nolan leaned into it all throughout “fIREHORSE.” This tune involves the modulation to a new key and some Professor Longhair piano vibes as well. I was continuously impressed by Kevin’s skills on all the instruments he played during the tracking and overdubbing sessions for this album. He is a true wizard of music and I feel very lucky to have crossed his path.
